California requirements
Since January 1, 2023, CSLB has required C-20 (HVAC) licensees to carry workers compensation even if they have no employees. If your workers comp lapses, your license can be suspended.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need workers comp if I work alone?
Yes, for HVAC. California requires C-20 licensees to have workers compensation even with no employees.
Does general liability cover my own tools?
No. General liability covers damage you cause to others. Your tools and equipment need inland marine (tools and equipment) coverage.
