Frequently asked questions
Is business insurance required in California?
California requires workers compensation as soon as you have one employee, and commercial auto liability for vehicles used in business. Other policies such as general liability are usually required by contracts, leases, licensing boards or clients rather than state law.
What’s the difference between general liability and professional liability?
General liability covers bodily injury and property damage to others. Professional liability (errors and omissions) covers financial losses caused by your advice, services or mistakes.
What is a certificate of insurance (COI)?
A one-page document showing your coverage, limits and policy dates. Clients and general contractors ask for one before you start work. Request one here.
What does “additional insured” mean?
It extends your liability coverage to another party, such as a general contractor or landlord, for claims arising from your work. Many contracts require it.
What is a business owners policy (BOP)?
A package that combines general liability, commercial property and business income coverage, usually at a lower price than buying them separately.
What is a workers comp audit?
At the end of the policy term the carrier compares your actual payroll to the estimate you paid on. You may owe more or get money back, so accurate payroll reporting matters.
Do I need commercial auto if I use my personal car for work?
Personal auto policies often exclude business use. If you haul tools, make deliveries or have employees driving, you likely need commercial auto or hired and non-owned auto coverage.
How fast can I get coverage?
Many policies can be bound the same day once we have your information and payment. Some specialty risks take a few days to underwrite.
Why use an independent agent instead of buying online?
We compare multiple carriers, help you pick the right limits and coverage, and handle certificates, changes and claims questions for you.
